The Elements and Principles of Design

A brief look at the elements and principles of design

Your Assignment:

Create 14 boxes (minimum 3x3") on several sheets of white paper.
In each box, create a visually interesting, smart (well thought out) and good (representative) example of EACH element and principle of design.

Think about FORM (looks good and well thought out) and FUNCTION (serves the intended purpose - good representation)

You may use ONLY newspaper, black construction paper and ONE other colour of construction paper.
You do not have to use all three in each square.

OR you may create and fill these boxes on the computer. If you use the computer you must create your own designs for each of the elements and principles of design using only text blocks (like newspaper print - lorem ipsum*), black and one other colour.

Elements of Design                              Principles of Design
Line                                                 Proportion
Shape                                               Emphasis
Space                                               Rhythm/Pattern
Texture                                            Variety
Value                                               Contrast
Colour                                             Unity
                                                        Balance
                                                        Movement

TEXT BLOCK for computer use
This is the latin block of text used as place holder text for graphic design. When you know you're going to have text, but you don't have the text ready yet, you can use this to hold it's place for the design phase. Copy and paste this text to use in your design.
