Web banner ad for PSA - Individual Assignment

For a portion of your culminating, to accompany your PSA video, you must each design a web banner ad known as a "fat skyscraper" which is 240x400 pixels. Since it is for web, the resolution only needs to be
70 p.p.i.
Here is an example.

Since the ad will be quite small on a computer screen, consider a strong and clear image preferably a distinct photograph from your PSA and the slogan or quote used in your PSA.

You must have a photograph. You must have text. Placement, font choice, colour and size are up to you.
Consider having a web address (similar to your PSA) as your call to action.

Colour mode should be RGB!! Not CMYK.
Resolution should be 72 ppi
Size 240x400 pixels

You will lose marks if you have not created this ad in EXACTLY the right dimensions, resolution and colour mode. And/or if you fail to follow submission instructions EXACTLY.
I will be evaluation your ad based on the following for 5 marks each.

Visual Impact (Dynamic and eye-catching)
Strong Slogan (well chosen and impactful)
Composition and placement of image/text
Visual Hierarchy (Emphasis)
Emotional Impact (Makes you think/feel)
Unity (Connection to PSA video - use of image from the video)
Choice of Image (Best choice for quality and impact - clear and easy to "read" visually)
Choice of Font (size, style, colour fits well with mood and impact of PSA)
Web address (Call to Action) placed and sized appropriately (smaller than Slogan, but readable)

Please post your finished ad on your blog AND drop it in the drop folder with the following file name.
I would like to see a saved jpg AND psa with LastName_FirstInitial_PSAbanner.psd and LastName_FirstInitial_PSAbanner.jpg

Note: From Photoshop you should choose Save for Web from the File menu and choose jpg.

Everything is due: Friday June 13th, 2014 by the end of the day.

Assignment - The Photo Essay

A photo essay is a collection of photos that help tell the story of something or someone or a group of people engaged in something. Vague? Well it should be. Almost anything could be used for your photo essay.
Find something that has to do with your connection to Lakeshore - either the school or the community. It should be something that interests you. Check with Ms. Silverman once you have a topic in mind.

Types of photos:
Action - people doing. People engaged in an activity. Not posed.
Reaction - people reacting to something. These shots show emotion and add so much to the human aspect of the story.
Environment - what are the physical surroundings? Get a wide shot that shows the whole space you're telling the story about. Also, you can try to capture the 'vibe' of the environment - the mood - are people happy/sad/excited etc.?
Detail/Close-up - Find some interesting details that can help show specific aspects of the story you're trying to tell. Get some well composed close up shots to demonstrate this.
People - more candid shots of people that can help add to the depth of the story you're telling.

Step 1: Choose your topic. Find a topic that can be narrowed down to be as specific as possible so that you can capture this 'story' in 5-10 photos.

Step 2: Make a list of photo ideas so you don't forget anything when you're shooting. Write down specific ideas you might have to capture action, reaction, environment etc. Show this list to Ms. Silverman with your story idea for a mark and approval BEFORE going out to shoot. Then, take the list with you so you don't forget anything!

Step 3: Go out and shoot. Sign out a camera for when you need it and start shooting!

Step 4: Edit. Find 5-10 photos that tell the story. Make each of the photos you choose the best compositions, but also the best variety to help tell your story. Edit them to improve contrast and cropping.

Step 5: Submit to the drop folder in a folder you call Photo_Essay_lastname_firstInitial. AND post them on your blog with a caption that explains each photo. Captions should add information, and not just state the obvious. They should include accurate names and dates and information.

Photoshopping...

Once you have completed the Composition Photography Assignment, you should drop the composition folder into the drop off folder. Then, post each of the 5 images in a blog post, with a brief sentence or two explaining why each photo expresses the compositional tool you chose.

Using 1-2 of your more graphic images, explore the possibilities in Photoshop and manipulate two of the photos you've taken.
Avoid using masks, or cropping too much. Play with colour, filters, blending modes etc. to keep the composition of your photo working well, but enhancing and emphasizing parts of it.

Once finished, post them on your blog and write a few sentences explaining what you did in Photoshop.

The Elements and Principles of Design

A brief look at the elements and principles of design

Your Assignment:

Create 14 boxes (minimum 3x3") on several sheets of white paper.
In each box, create a visually interesting, smart (well thought out) and good (representative) example of EACH element and principle of design.

Think about FORM (looks good and well thought out) and FUNCTION (serves the intended purpose - good representation)

You may use ONLY newspaper, black construction paper and ONE other colour of construction paper.
You do not have to use all three in each square.

OR you may create and fill these boxes on the computer. If you use the computer you must create your own designs for each of the elements and principles of design using only text blocks (like newspaper print - lorem ipsum*), black and one other colour.

Elements of Design                              Principles of Design
Line                                                 Proportion
Shape                                               Emphasis
Space                                               Rhythm/Pattern
Texture                                            Variety
Value                                               Contrast
Colour                                             Unity
                                                        Balance
                                                        Movement

TEXT BLOCK for computer use
This is the latin block of text used as place holder text for graphic design. When you know you're going to have text, but you don't have the text ready yet, you can use this to hold it's place for the design phase. Copy and paste this text to use in your design.
